Blood cannot be manufactured; it must come from lifesaving donations. Whole blood is a living tissue that circulates through the body carrying oxygen and nutrients that sustain life. It contains red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each whole blood donation can touch three lives when separated into the various components.
One out of three people will need blood in their lifetime. Those who are seriously injured or undergo major surgery often lose half of their total supply of eight to ten pints. That loss can be fatal if it is not replenished quickly with a transfusion.
Be the lifesaving link to patients by giving blood today.

Casey’s story, and thousands like hers, are being told every day across the country, because every one of us are united by one common bond, one life-giving gift -- the gift of blood. It’s given by caring, concerned citizens to people they’ll never know.
Listen to what a single pint of blood can do!

Blood Donations Make a World of Difference
Across America and around the world, environmentalism, conservation, and sustainability constantly make headlines. Natural resources are threatened but people everywhere are taking action to combat the challenge. From reducing carbon footprints to recycling bottles and cans, the effort is widespread and widely accepted -- second nature to many. However, this is not necessarily top of mind when it comes to life’s most precious natural resource... blood. Since blood cannot be manufactured, it must come from volunteer donors, who, with every donation, are making a world of difference. They are not only touching patients but entire families.
We know first hand that when accidents happen, when illness intervenes, and when tragedy strikes, life is measured in units: units of blood. Blood is the essence of life. Blood delivers healing, health, and hope. Blood is life’s ultimate resource and it’s all around us, and in all of us, yet it’s still in short supply. Today, the demand for blood continues and so does the demand on our blood center to collect, process, and distribute those special units of life.
As we begin a new decade, pledge a little extra time to make a difference in our community by reducing your carbon footprint, volunteering for a worthy cause, recycling bottles, cans, and your blood. Be a regular blood donor. Be part of generation Red.

Jeanie Benson - Blood Donor, Financial Contributor
Jeanie Benson donates regularly and has contributed more than 53 pints of blood to the local supply. She finds satisfaction in making a difference and assisting patients by this simple act. Her tradition will pass on to another generation because she encourages her children to also get involved.
Not only does Jeanie give blood, she contributes financial support. A few years ago her employer, Sonoma County Schools, gave her an opportunity to contribute to the non-profit of her choice. Jeanie chose Blood Bank of the Redwoods. “I appreciate that blood is a renewable resource and blood donations make a huge difference in our community.”
Jeanie has gone the extra mile, giving both blood and money. The Board of Directors, management and staff thank Jeanie for her steadfast commitment through the years. It is through dedicated individuals like Jeanie and others seen on our website that patients in Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties can always rely on.
