High School Program

We hold blood drives at 25 high schools throughout Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties. High school students in the North Bay make up nearly 20 percent of all blood donations.

Our high school students fill gymnasiums and multipurpose rooms with goodwill, giving blood and helping their community.

Statistics show that people who begin donating in high school are more likely to continue giving blood throughout their lifetime. We aim to spark the interest of young donors with the hope of maintaining that commitment for years to come.

High School Chairperson Spotlight

For the past year Jane Khoury, a senior at Ukiah High School, has organized three successful blood drives as the Blood Drive Chairperson for her school.  She has found that students want to help others and often hears them excitedly say, ‘I saved three lives!’ Students know that each pint of blood can be separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets and given to patients with specific needs.

“I have never seen such enthusiasm to giving blood until this year,” says Jane. “All three of the blood drives during the 2008/2009 school year have averaged 79 donors. I have continuously seen the same students come back to all three of the blood drives.”

Jane says that most students who give blood prepare as best they can by drinking plenty of water the day before and day of the drive, and eating a healthy breakfast and lunch. Jane thinks that blood donation helps students learn healthy habits and offers a great way for students to get excited about volunteering their time.
