Every day, blood donations help accident victims, people undergoing surgery and patients receiving treatments for serious diseases. Those who give blood give the gift of
life to others, and there is a constant need to replenish our blood supply.
Only a small percentage of our citizens across the country are blood donors, and it is vital that we step forward and help. By volunteering to give blood and inspiring friends, loved ones and peers to do the same, we can save more lives. Additionally, simple actions like assisting your local blood center or sponsoring a blood drive can make a big difference in
many lives.
To all those who have donated blood, I thank you for the tremendous compassion you
have shown to your fellow Americans. I encourage those who have not participated in
this gratifying experience to give it a chance. It only takes a few minutes, and this small
sacrifice is nothing compared to the gift you will offer to people in need.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHW ARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of
California, do hereby proclaim January 2010 as "Volunteer Blood Donor Month."
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of
the State of California to be affixed this 17th day of December 2009.

“Annually, four million American lives are saved through donated blood. The demand for blood is greater today than ever before, and California’s blood supply needs constant replenishment. Accident victims, surgery patients, and individuals receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases all utilize blood, and our state needs more than 1.5 million units of blood or blood products each year for these patients. During Blood Donor Month, I urge all citizens in good health to donate and participate in saving a life.”
